Passive House Design

Building an energy efficient future

Edge Innovation is passionate about sharing our knowledge of Passive House design with New Zealanders. The first Passive House (or Passivhaus) was built in Germany in 1991… Passive House design has since been embraced around the world.

A stringent quality assurance process ensures Passive House Standards are met in relation to:

  • Airtighness

  • Comfort & air quality

  • Insulation & Windows

  • Controlled ventilation & heat recovery

  • Energy efficient lighting, appliances & devices

  • Optimised solar gains & renewable energy source e.g. Roof solar pv panels

How does a Passive House work?

  • Controlled super low energy ventilation system with Heat Recovery

  • Continuous supply of fresh, super-filtered air

  • Low to ZERO Heating & Cooling energy use

  • All interior surfaces warm - Eliminates draughts and condensation

  • Dry, warm & healthy: ALL rooms minimum 20°, year-round

Edge Innovation builds and renovates to Certified Passive House Standards, at very similar prices to standard projects. Passive House Standards also provide complete design flexibility - including layout, interior design,
fit-out and furnishings.

We provide full Project Management for Residential and Light Commercial projects:

  • Passive House Design

  • Interior Design

  • Supply & Construction

  • Installation & Commissioning

  • Passive House / EnerPHit / PHI Low Energy Certification

Passive House Certification

Edge Innovation highly recommends having your Passive House building Certified and Registered by the Passive House Institute. Certification isn’t compulsory nor is it a legal requirement, but it’s a great advantage and will add significant value to your investment. Your Certification is entered into a global register and a numbered plaque is fixed to your building, as proof of performance as a Passive House.

EnerPHit Certification: For Renovations, Edge Innovation can retrofit homes and Light Commercial buildings to lower EnerPHit Standards, which allow for higher energy demands, and circumstances such as unfavourable building orientation or building restrictions.

PHI Low Energy Building Standard: This additional Standard (introduced by the Passive House Institute in 2016) for new builds and renovations, may be attained by buildings which are not able to fully comply with all Certification criteria, but are still highly energy efficient.

Certification Process

Concept Design

A very interesting, enjoyable process: Edge Innovation consults with you and designs the building, using a PHPP: Passive House Planning Package. We can also adapt existing Plans to meet Passive House Standards.

Developed Design

We submit the completed PHPP, construction details and Plans to a Passive House Certifier, for pre-Certification approval.

Construction

The excitement builds… Edge Innovation works with the Passive House Certifier to document the construction process and on-site performance testing.

Final Certification

A rewarding feeling: we submit the final results to the Passive House Certifier, for Certification.
